No education system can exceed the quality of its teachers

"The only way to improve outcomes is to improve instruction."

That's the key takeaway from a big McKinsey study (PDF file) on global education policy. Regardless of country, teacher quality has more impact on student performance than any other factor, including class size and per capita spending.

That's not exactly news. The interesting part of the study is its examination of best practices for improving instruction, both by recruiting better teachers in the first place and by developing the skills of teachers once they've been hired.

XRD Sample Characterization

Dah 2 hari straight dah mesin XRD (X-ray diffraction) kat bawah tu ONnnnn jer memanjang. Sekeping sample amik masa 12 jam utk omega & omega/2theta scan. Satu hari boleh characterize 2 keping sample jer, n of course 24 hours non-stop per day. Dah penat dah berkelah kat dlm bangunan nih.

Jap tadi ingat nak pegi tido kat tingkat 4, cek XRD kat tingkat 1... rupa-rupanya X-ray generator nyer power putus lagi!!! Haiyyyaaa... problem maa. Rugi masa 6 jam, tetiba kena abort kat tengah2! Astaghfirullahalazim. Sepatutnya measuremnt nih siap tepat jam 9 pagi esok. Tp, nampaknya kol 4 petang esok baru boleh siap.

Ya Allah... harap2 measurement yg re-do nih x-ray power tak terputus lagi. Banyak abis masa. Ngantuk nih... tgh heat-up balik x-ray generator tu, kol 4 pagi nnt baru boleh start balik measurement. Sedey. Dugaan sungguh kali nih. Tp Alhamdulillah, stakat separuh result yg keluar tadi, mmg quantum well nyer fringe-peaks mmg lawa sangat2, even on Si substrate, even on SLS (strained-super-lattice)!

Sepuluh Tahun Sebelum Merdeka (Ten Years Before Independence)

The most inspiring documentary on Malaysian politics before Malaysian independence.
Sepuluh Tahun Sebelum Merdeka

Update 13 April 2008: This video shows scenes around the airport officially released by UKOM Terengganu. Many Datuks are also there... but I'm not sure who they are. The part when Tuanku Mizan "melambai-lambai" to the Rakyats really touches me.

(My personal comments: These are qualities of UMNO leaders in Terengganu (and Malaysia)... shame on you!)

A short stop-over in Hong Hong

I'm unable to write long this time. These are just my personal notes for my future travel to Hong Kong City.

How to go to Hong Kong city from Chek Lap Kok Airport:
1. After exiting arrival hall, head for "Airbus" (with bus logo) sign-board. You can ask tourist information desk after exiting custom check. There're lots of guides and maps there, just take anything you want. I was a little confused when followed the bus sign as there's also "Hotel shuttle bus" heading to "Terminal 2", but don't go for that if you want a cheaper method going to the city.
2. At the airport exit (if you follow the "Airbus" sign), you can see many double-decker bus in-front of you, and there's ticket/information counter on your left.
3. I booked a hostel at Mirador Mansion which is located at Tsim Sha Shui, so buy a ticket route A21 at CitiFlyer counter (left counter). Wait for the bus at A21 waiting area. You can check the location at the information board in front of the bus station. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BUY RETURN JOURNEY TICKET INSTEAD OF SINGLE JOURNEY TICKET as you'll get discount for the second journey. Single journey ticket would cost HKD35, while return journey ticket would cost HKD55.
4. CityFlyer airport buses are red and yellow colored, just for a note. Make sure to be in front at the queue as you can get better seat in the bus. I would prefer front seat of the second floor of the double-decker bus. When entering the bus, show ticket to the bus driver and put it into the coin box. You can pay directly pay at the box if you don't have ticket (However, I'm not sure how you can get return journey if you do this way). Put your luggage at the luggage area (CCTV monitored), and go get a good seat.
5. Enjoy your journey, as it may take around 40-50 minutes to Hong Kong city (Mong Kok or Tsim Sha Shui area). Tsim Sha Shui is at the 13th stop (number and location name is shown in Cantonese and English at the LED panel inside the bus for each stop). Better get ready to get-off the bus before the bus actually stop at your desired location. I saw a girl shouting "Wai, wait, hold on!!!" to the driver in my journey.
6. Stay cool when your get out of the bus. There'll be so many pedestrians around you. Some girls (may I say "makcik") will come to you and offer body massage, face massage, foot massage, etc... some Indians/ Pakistani will come to you and give your their restaurants pamphlets, etc. At Tshim Sha Shui (Nathan Street), you'll see many European, Indian/Pakistani, Philippine, Indonesia/Malaysia, Japanese and Korean faces around you, not only Chinese. Walk through the Nathan Street following the bus direction. You'll find Maridor Mansion at the 58th. If you go straight to the front, you'll find Holiday Inn (one block further), then the Chung-King Mansion. Head into Maridor Mansion entrance, lift is to your right after passing 3-4 shops at the entrance. For my hostel, I've to go to the 13th floor where the hostel counter is (just in-front of the lift). The "nyonya" there is quite "baik la jugak", explaining me simple things not only about my room, but also about the building itself (the lift you used to enter the building just now is unusable from 8PM to 6AM, you've to use another lift at the back which is equipped with CCTV camera for security).
7. Be happy with your room, as that's the cheapest you can get at the BEST located area in Hong Kong!!! Instead keeping yourself in the room, go outside and watch & feel Hong Kong city. Go walking along Nathan Street for cheap bargains, or Kings Street for good meals!
8. I took subway from Tsim Sha Shui station (subway entrance is joust around the Mirador Mansion) to Mong Kok. At first, I'm not sure which exit should I go for, but after strolling around, I think exit heading to Girls Street (not sure/remember the name in English though) is the best one. I' not sure whether they really sell girls for pleasure, but you'll see stalls selling everything (from HK t-shirts to lingerie) just along the street! I bought Hong Kong 100% cotton t-shirt for my friend in Japan and for myself just for HKD25 dollar each here. They'll put HKD35-40 per piece, but its your time to bargain. Normally, you can get nearly half the advertised price. There're also many shops selling home electronics, computers, and cellphones around.
9. To go back to the airport, take A21 CitiFlyer airport bus at the bus stop just at the opposite side of the Mirador Mansion. The bus would take 40-50 minutes to the airport, so plan your time properly. For my case, I take bus at Mirador Mansion at 1PM for my flight at 4:30PM, and the timing is just nice. I waited for nearly 40 minutes for Cathay Pacific flight check-in at counter C (economy class ticket). Immigration clearance didn't take long time though.

The flight journey from Hong Kong to Nagoya was very nice. I got a cute Japanese girl travelling alone from Australia just next to my seat. We just chat along the journey until the plane landed in Nagoya Centrair International Airport. How come the stewardess misunderstood us as couple along the journey... hmmm, I won't elaborate on that though... <^-^>

Good news from the opposite side of the globe...

Actually, I'm now at my hometown in Kuala Terengganu for a short break. I'm not really happy to take a break at this challenging moment in my research, but this is the only moment that I would be able to "take a Kit-Kat" (reads: take a break). And, it's extremely short... just 5 days to go and return to a place a quarter distance of the globe! I'm quite used to this kind of life, maybe.

Alhamdulillah, the abstract I submitted last January for MRS International Materials Research Conference in Chongqing, China has been ACCEPTED! Alhamdulillah, syukur ke hadrat Ilahi. This would be a great start for my international debut <^-^>

Tahniah Barisan Rakyat/ Alternatif. BN perlu berubah untuk memenangi kembali hati rakyat terutamanya golongan muda yang bakal memimpin Malaysia. Sekian.

Just found this on the net...

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centred;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, they may cheat you;
Be forthright anyway.
What you spent years building, they may destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
The good you do today, they often will forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it will never be enough;
Give the world the best youve got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and GOD;
It was never between you and them, Anyway.

Bypass and Disable Genuine Windows Validation Check

As detailed in Bypass Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Check in Windows Update, Microsoft has made it harder for illegitimate, or for whatever reason, your copy of Microsoft Windows couldn’t be validated, users to retrieve updates via Microsoft Updates or Windows Update, and download programs from Microsoft Download Center.

If you just want to download and apply critical updates to your system, you will be still able to do that without any hack and crack. Just set your Windows’ Automatic Updates (found in Control Panel) setting to Automatic, and let Windows does the updating job in the background. The downside is, it won’t get for you the optional updates.

If you want to download optional components from Windows Update, or simply want to download Windows Defender, Windows Media Player 10, Photo Story 3, DirectX 9 and other application softwares from Microsoft Download Center that require WGA validation tool, you will need to apply a easy and safe hack to bypass the checking.

Open Windows Explorer by clicking Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer.
Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data folder.
Delete (or backup or move to another folder, if you want) data.dat file.
Create a new empty data.dat: You can create a new text file by (make sure you are at the right folder at above) clicking File -> New -> Text Document or right clicking on Windows Explorer window then click New -> Text Document. Then, either rename the file to data.dat. The original .txt extention of the text file need to be changed too. You can disable the hiding of extension of known file types, or follow the following steps to create a new file out of the text file:
Open the text document you just created.
Click on File -> Save As.
Change the Save as type to “All Files”.
In the File name, type data.dat
Click Save.
Go back to the Windows Explorer, at folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data, check that data.dat exists.
Delete the text file you created previously.
Set the attributes of data.dat to Hidden and Read-Only. Attributes can be set by right click on the data.dat file, and then click on Properties.
Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation check has been disabled.
Note: The data.dat that are replacing the original data.dat can be blank text file or empty, or you may type whatever you want there.

With this hack (or crack if you want), Windows WGA piracy check will be bypassed and you can now download software from Download Center or apply updates from Microsoft/Windows Updates.

Non-stop 3 day clean room process... ngantuk!

Alhamdulillah... baru jer abis xperiment aku utk Ni/Au/Au(cap)... 3 hari tak stop... esok Insya'Allah buat measurement. Nak wat ari nih dah tak larat... dah penat & ngantuk nih. 3 hari... more than 15 hours of work and less than 6 hours sleep, OK la jugak kan. Tp laporrrrrrr!!! Ntah ape la aku makan, telan roti sapu kaya yg Ma bagi bawak bekal gi Shanghai ari tu jer.

Mlm tadi gi makan kat Tenki, tak larat dah nak masak... lagipun kalu aku masak, rugi 2 jam masa, baik guna utk tido. Ntah mlm tadi aku tido kol 10-1 jer kot. Kucai kejut awal sgt aa... aku cek timer rupanya kol 2 baru jadik 8 jam utk vacuum pumping utk evaporation beam deposition kat clean room nih. Mandi + semayang subuh pagi tadi, kol 4 pagi aku bertolak... gi pulangkan dvd kat Tsutaya dulu sbelum dtg lab... switch ON main power EB at 4:30AM... siap Au deposion at 5:45AM, then masuk acetone for lift-off. Siap boleh bet kat eBay lagi pagi tadi sementara nunggu acetone@55 deg C (30 min). Lift off cam ok sket dari Ni/Au sebelum nih, tp senang sgt tercabut. Patut kurangkan mase utk acetone immersion kot. Takpun ubah surface treatment before Au deposition. Air and N2 ambient annealing done simultaneously, everyhing was OK.

Okay la... dah jadik xperiment report plak... kepala pk pasal mende tu jer. Stat from esok dah kena concentrate on LD process pulak, sensei & Hao san dah stat bunyi dah tu. Ya Allah... moga2 electrode nih berjaya dpt Ohmic with the lowest specific contact resistance ever, to enable lasing... Insya'Allah.

Bye dulu, nak semayang Zohor & makan roti plak... nnt pegi jejalan Osu/ Sakae aa jap... this is the only holiday I've for this weekend... tinggal 4-6 jam jer lagi. Wassalam.

Alhamdulillah... syukur...

Pagi tadi Alhamdulillah dah settle presentation kelas Egawa sensei, tak la teruk sgt. Kat Ebers-Moll modell tu ok aa... semua equations boleh disettlekan. Tak percaya pulak aku... start dari awal kelas die, mase abis Emers-Moll tu dah kol 11:45... 5 min jer lagi tinggal mase. Egawa tanyer aa boleh abis ke tak nih, aku cakap ok kot... tp mmg tak sempat aa. Pasal Emitter Efficiency tu... aku dah blank dah... kurang persediaan kot pasal tu. Lepas tu, die cakap sambung minggu depan aa pulok. Aku ok jer, boleh prepare lebih sket.

Lepas Zohor & makan ngan Kucai, Kutu, Zam, Pejal n Mokh... aku ajak Orioka buat I-V and TLM meas. Alhamdulillah... syukur sungguh! VERY GOOD RESULT for my p-GaN Ni/Au electrode, guna aku nyer surface treatment procedure. Alhamdulillah... usaha tak tido malam & bangun pagi2 tak tentu masa pegi skolah sejak-2-menjak nih. Process utk nih baru jer stat sabtu lepas (RIE/ activation anneal), Ahad cuti, Isnin (surface cleaning/ TLM).. sampai load dlm evaporation chamber kol 12 mlm tu. Pgi Selase aku dtg kol 7, metal evaporation sampai kol 8:30 tu, then gi kelas sampai kol 12. Kol 1 gitu stat ngan Orioka buat annealing. Ari nih lepas presentation tadi buat meas tu... Alhamdulillah...

Good motivation for further investigation in surface treatment method... wassalam.

"Yang terjadi biar saja terjadi...
Bagaimanapun hidup memang hanya cerita...
Cerita tentang meninggalkan dengan yang ditinggalkan..."

Cinta
by Melly Goeslow feat Kris Dayanti

Menatap jalan yang menjauh
Tentukan arah yg ku mau
Tempatkan aku pada satu peristiwa
Yang membuat hati lara

Di dekat engkau aku tenang
Sendu matamu penuh tanya
Misteri hidup akankah menghilang?
Dan bahagia di akhir cerita

Cinta tegarkan hatiku
Tak mau sesuatu merenggut engkau
Naluriku berkata tak ingin terulang lagi
Kehilangan cinta hati bagai raga tak bernyawa
Aku junjung petuamu
Cintai dia yg mencintaiku
Hati yang dulu belayar kini telah menepi
Bukankah hidup kita akhirnya harus bahagia

Di dekat engkau aku tenang
Sendu matamu penuh tanya
Misteri hidup akankah menghilang?
Dan bahagia di akhir cerita

Cinta tegarkan hatiku
Tak mau sesuatu merenggut engkau
Naluriku berkata tak ingin terulang lagi
Kehilangan cinta hati bagai raga tak bernyawa

Aku junjung petuamu
Cintai dia yg mencintaiku
Hati yang dulu belayar kini telah menepi
Bukankah hidup kita akhirnya harus bahagia

Cinta biar saja ada
Yang terjadi biar saja terjadi
Bagaimanapun hidup memang hanya cerita
Cerita tentang meninggalkan dengan yang ditinggalkan

Cinta...

Changing the MAC Address in W2K and XP

Changing the MAC address in W2K and XP

(This page stolen from http://www.klcconsulting.net/change_mac_w2k.htm
because I wanted a copy in my notes here so I wouldn't lose it.)

Method 1:

This is depending on the type of Network Interface Card (NIC) you have. If
you have a card that doesn't support Clone MAC address, then you have to go to
second method.

    1. Goto Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click on Network and
      Dial-up Connections.

    2. Right click on the NIC you want to change the MAC address and click on
      properties.

    3. Under"General" tab, click on the "Configure" button.

    4. Clickon "Advanced" tab.

    5. Under "Property section" you should see an item called "Network Address" or "Locally Administered Address", click on it.

    6. On the right side, under "Value" type in the New MAC address you want to
assign to your NIC. Usually this value is entered without the "-" between the MAC address numbers.

    7. Go to command prompt and type in "ipconfig /all" or "net config rdr" to
verify the changes. If the changes are not materialized, then use the second method.

    8. If successful, reboot your systems.

Method 2:

This method requires some knowledge on the Windows Registry. If you are not familiar with Windows Registry, just use the SMAC tool to change the MAC addresses, or consult with a technical person before you attempt on the following steps. Also, make sure you have a good backup of your registry.

a. Goto command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" and

I. Record the Description for the NIC you want to change.

II. Record the Physical Address for the NIC you want to change.
Physical Address is the MAC Address

Figure 1.

b. Goto command prompt and type "net config rdr" and you should see
something like

Figure 2.

c. Remember the number between the long number (GUID) inside the { }.
For example, in the above "net config rdr" output, for MAC address
"0C095ECB793", you should remember {1C9324AD-ADB7-4920-B02D-AB281838637A}. You can copy and paste it to the Notepad, that's probably the easiest way. (See figure 2.)

d. Go to Start -> Run, type "regedt32" to start registry editor.
Do not use "Regedit".

e. Do a BACKUP of your registry in case you screw up the following steps.
To do this

I. Click
on "HEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine" sub-window

II. Click
on the root key "KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".

III. Click
on the drop-down menu "Registry -> Save Subtree As" and save the backup
registry in to a file. Keep this file in a safe place.

f. Go to "KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEMCurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-
08002BE10318}. Double click on it to expand the tree. The
subkeys are 4-digit numbers, which represent particular network adapters. You should see it starts with 0000, then 0001, 0002, 0003 and so
on. (See figure 3.)

Figure 3.

g. Go through each subkey that starts with 0000. Click on 0000, check DriverDesc
keyword on the right to see if that's the NIC you want to change the MAC
address. The DriveDesc should match the Description you
recorded from step (a.-I.). If you are not 100% sure about the DriverDesc,
then you can verify by checking if the NetCfgInstanceID keyword value
matches the GUID from step (c).

If there is no match, then move on to 0001, 0002, 0003, and so on, until you
find the one you want. Usually 0000 contains the first NIC you
installed on the computer.

In this demonstration, 0000 is the NIC I selected. (See figure 3.)

h. Once you selected the subkey (i.e. 0000), check if there is a keyword "NetworkAddress" exist in the right side of the window. (See figure 3.)

I. If "NetworkAddress" keyword does not exist, then create this new keyword:

i. Click on the drop down menu "Edit -> Add Value".

ii. In the Add Value window, enter the following value then click OK. (See figure 4.)

Value Name: = NetworkAddress

Data Type: = REG_SZ

Figure 4.

iii. String Editor window will pop up at this time (see figure
5.)

iv. Enter the new MAC address you want to modify. Then click OK.

(There should not be any "-" in this address. Your entry should only consist of 12 digits as seen in the figure 5.)

II. If "NetworkAddress" keyword exists, make sure it shows the
keyword type is REG_SZ, and it should show as NetworkAddress:REG_SZ: .
This keyword might not have a value at this time.

i. D
ouble click on the keyword NetworkAddress
and the String Editor window will pop up. (See Figure 5.)

ii. Enter the new MAC address you want to modify. Then click OK.

(There should not be any "-" in this address. Your entry should only consist of 12 digits as seen in the figure 5.)

Figure 5.

j. There are 2 ways to make the new MAC address active. Method I does
not require a system reboot:

I. Goto Start->Setting->Control Panel, and double click on
"Network Neighborhood".

WARNING: Make sure you understand that you WILL lose the
network connection after completing step "ii." below, and if you have a DHCP client, you will get a new IP address after completing step "iii."

i. Select the Network Adaptor you just changed the MAC address.

ii. Right click on the selected Network Adaptor and click "Disable."

Verify the status column for this adaptor changes to "Disabled"

iii. Right click on the selected Network Adaptor and click "Enable."

Verify the status column for this adaptor changes to "Enabled"

iv. If for any reason it cannot be disabled or re-enabled, you have to reboot your system to make the changes effective.

II. Reboot your Windows system.

k. Once completing step j (if rebooting the system, wait until the reboot is
completed), go to command prompt, type "ipconfig /all" to confirm
the new MAC address.

Restore The TRUE Hardware burned-in MAC Address:

  1. Remove the entry you added:

  1. If you followed Method 1, then go back to the advanced properties window and remove the entry you add.

  2. If you followed Method 2, then remove the "NetworkAddress" keyword you added in the registry.

  1. Usestep (j) above to activate the change you make.

  2. Once rebooted, go to command prompt, type "ipconfig /all" to confirm
    the original MAC address.

If MAC Address changes does not work:

If for whatever reason the MAC address cannot be changed using method 2, make sure you restore the registry setting by following the "Restore The TRUE Hardware burned-in MAC Address" instruction above. If necessary, restore the registry you just backed-up to get your system back to the original state. You can do this by clicking on the drop-down menu "Registry->Restore", and restore your backup registry file.

or use SMAC.

Dari pagi berlari sampai malam

Nih la idup... pagi bangun tido, terus bergegas dtg lab... awal gak pagi tadi, kol 8 sampai skolah. Plan semalam nak dtg kol 6-7 pagi, tp terbangun lambat aa... 7:02AM baru terbangun... nih kes tutup jam loceng nyer pasal aa nih.

Sampai skolah, 8:10 dah masuk clean room, buat HCl etching utk sample aku 2 ari lepas. Then load dlm evaporation beam chamber for Al deposition. Berpusing kepala, tangan ngan kaki nak kejar mase nyer pasal... kol 8:05AM (jam clean room) abis setting, terus berlari keluar pegi lecture hall utk kelas Yamamoto sensei. Alhamdulillah la jugak sbb partner Jepun duk sebelah best la jugak... Yonaha pun ade kat depan jer, so taklah cuak sgt cam kelas first time last week. Jepun tu pun baik jer ajar aku... kelas nyer kerja pun tak teruk sgt hari nih... kire menarik aa jugak.

Abis kelas, berlari balik lab... Takashima n Orioka dah pun ada tunggu aku, BAGUS!!! "Kol 11 nnt kite stat", aku kate kat diorang aa nih. Then, stat la kerja aku... dari deposition Al, lift-off sampai RTA annealing. Lepas diorang balik dlm kol 5:30 PM tadi, aku sambung lagi photolithography dan sekarang nih tgh vacum utk Ni/Au deposition. Lama gak nunggu nih... dlm 90 ke 120 min. Makan aa megi dulu, ntah satu hape tak telan lagi hari nih... kebulur betul aku nih!

Hmm... pasal scholarship, aku dah jumpa dah Mr Yamaguchi (Foreign Student Office) siang tadi, memacam die tanyer aku pasal visa ari tu... scholar pun banyak die tanyer. Aku skarang nih jadik private student katenyer. Pasal JPA x approve lagi scholarship aku pun die dah tau... aku amik die nyer tel & fax number skali utk Husna (KUKUM) antar financial affidavit kat die nanti.

Okay aa dulu... makan & buat report electromagnetic nih sementara tunggu abis vacum. Bye & wassalam ;)

Xperiment lagi...

Huh... lama sungguh dok tulih blog nih. Nih sesaje bosan sambil makan meggi kat lab nih, tulih aa kejap. Pendape aa nok tulih nih... hmm... ari nih cam biase aa buat xperimen. Ingat tadi nak balik jer skali ngan Orioka (B4) lepas ajar die cara guna thermal resistance annealing, tp pk pk balik... baik aku terus buat photolithography utk TLM patterning. So, jimat sket masa utk esok. Abis semua TLM patterning malam nih utk 9 keping sample tu, esok tgh hari boleh start vacumm utk Al deposition. Abis kelas Opto-electronic kol 2:30PM tu, boleh deposit, then dlm kol 4:30 gitu dah boleh buat RTA anneal. Tp aku blank nih... nak anneal esok ker, lusa sbb lepas anneal tu kena teruskan xperiment tu dlm masa 6 jam tanpa henti utk elakkan sample tu rosak. Hmmm... peninn gak nih. Okay aa dulu, sambung lagi lain kali... abis dah mase nih.
